In 1659 the Aragonese Inquisition banned the Very Brief Account, and the ban was later extended to all of Spain. Only one edition of Las Casas’ Very Brief Account appeared in Spain during the seventeenth century appropriately enough, that edition was published in Barcelona during the Catalán revolt of 1646 against Castilian imperialism. After 1600 the memory of Las Casas fell under a heavy cloud. 3 But Spanish sensitivity to foreign criticism of Spain’s colonial record grew as her power in the Old and the New World declined. 2 His immense prestige served for a time to prevent the publication of such attacks upon him as that of Captain Vargas Machuca, who claimed that a “Huguenot translation” of the Very Brief Account spread lies about Spain and her work in the Indies. Simultaneously the influence of Las Casas and his Indianist movement virtually disappeared from the Spanish court. From his accession to the throne (1556), the dominant motive of Philip’s Indian policy was to augment the royal revenues in order to overcome the Crown’s desperate financial crisis. ![]() But while the Emperor Charles could allow a domestic debate on Spain’s Indian policies in the full sight and hearing of Europe, such a debate became unthinkable under his successor, Philip II. Royal fear of a colonial feudalism, more dangerous to the Crown than the shattered power of Indian kings and states, helps to explain the remarkable tolerance which allowed publication of this exposé. In 1552-1553 Bartolomé de las Casas published in Seville nine treatises severely critical of the Spanish Conquest in America, including the famous Very Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies. Arnoldsson makes no systematic effort to determine how much the Spaniards deserved this unfavorable opinion, but he concedes that the Spanish soldiery in Germany and the Netherlands did behave with cruelty, rapacity, and licentiousness. ![]() ![]() Sverker Arnoldsson 1 has shown that from the fourteenth century an unfavorable opinion of Spaniards prevailed among Italians as a result of the personal, economic, political, and cultural relations between the two peoples and that the nationalist and religious struggles of the sixteenth century provoked similar attitudes toward Spain in Germany and the Netherlands. If the essence of the Black Legend is defamatory criticism of Spain and the Spaniards, then the Legend has a history much older than the term itself. This essay attempts to test these premises, to clarify the meanings attached to the phrase, and to determine its historical accuracy. Despite its wide acceptance and use, however, it rests on premises whose validity has never been seriously questioned. T he term “B lack L egend” has long existed in the lexicon of Latin American history.

They actually fly past pretty quickly, with characters and foes moving as though they're under the influence of a haste spell augmented with liberal shots of Red Bull. Battles are not so numerous that you feel numbed by monotony. There is a lot of combat during these assignments, although you're never overwhelmed. Quests mix inventive tasks like playing PR man to an irritable dragon with typical go-fetch and locate-missing-people busywork. The story keeps you interested, even though it offers few surprises-or at least few surprises that you don't see coming a mile away You play as a newcomer to Avadon, one of Redbeard's warriors dedicated to helping the big guy keep the peace. The heart of the Midlands Pact is Avadon, a fortress ruled by the ominous Redbeard, a hero who might be going a little too far when it comes to guarding the realm from the bad guys. Events center on a fantasy land of magic and monsters dominated by the Midlands Pact, an alliance of five nations dedicated to protecting all that is good from evildoers. The generic medieval fantasy setting and plot are somewhat predictable, though. They tell a story and bring situations to life without being overly wordy. Even though the graphics don't do a complete job of immersing you in this fantasy world, textual blurbs bridge the gap between what you see and what you're supposed to be envisioning. Redbeard is good, bad, or some blend of both.ĭespite the flaws, you can't help but be drawn in once you go deeper into the game. The developer has at least posted more-comprehensive maps in the official forums on its website, but they're hardly an acceptable substitute. Even vital spots like stairs up and down aren't given icons, which can be incredibly annoying given the mazelike nature of many of the levels. Quests aren't noted on the minimap, and neither are some key characters and locales. Levels are typically massive and confusing, which isn't helped by the hit-and-miss minimap. Some user interface flaws get in the way, however. Performance is also very good, making this a good choice for older machines or even netbooks. You're given just enough for your mind's eye to work with, so suspending disbelief isn't a problem. Some areas feature a considerable amount of detail when it comes to furnishings, with elaborate layouts in bedrooms, libraries, and other locales. Thankfully, Avadon has a lot of appeal beyond this admittedly off-putting surface. Still, there is no way to roll up a custom character, so you're stuck with a quick choice before delving into the action. There are some variances, most notably in the way that the classes veer off into slightly innovative directions. The only difference is their names: the warrior is called a blademaster, the wizard a sorceress, the cleric a shaman, and the thief a shadowwalker. You get to type in a name and pick from four set Dungeons & Dragons-inspired classes that touch on the standard fighter, wizard, cleric, and thief archetypes. You start off with no real character customization options. Game options are sparse in the beginning. Oddly, a near-constant wind seems to blow whether you're indoors or out. The game has no music or voice acting, and monsters share a handful of attack noises. Only some of the textures stand up to scrutiny: the gravel roads and stone walls look pretty good. Outdoor locales are loaded with symmetrically arranged cacti, rocks, and other terrain features that make the landscape look surreal. Dungeon furniture and architecture mainly consist of standard chests and wardrobes like the set dressing in summer stock theater. Characters and monsters are soft-focus multicolored blobs, and you can't zoom the camera in to get a better look. Crude isometric visuals and paltry sound recall the 286 era. ![]() The single-player-only game could almost have been developed in 1989. With that said, you definitely need to possess the nostalgia gene to get the most out of this one.Īvadon ain't pretty, but it offers a lot of RPG depth to get your imagination working. Just like the developer's earlier efforts in the Avernum and Geneforge franchises, the game compensates for its archaic visuals and sound with an engaging focus on storytelling and turn-based party combat that recalls the glory days of the Gold Box games from the late '80s and early '90s. Considering that the most influential environmental factors shaping macroinvertebrate communities were variable across seasons, we argued that spatio-temporal investigations would provide more information on community assembly than single snapshot studies. Main conclusions: Both EMS analysis and the variance partitioning approach suggested environmental filtering is the principal structuring processes for macroinvertebrate assemblages throughout the year, although mass effects and dispersal limitation also play significant roles at smaller and larger spatial extents, respectively. However, spatial processes had gradually stronger effects at smaller and larger extents. ![]() Particularly, environmental filtering was the predominant mechanism at the intermediate spatial scale. Environmental control prevailed over spatial processes in structuring macroinvertebrate communities, but their relative influence on community variation was context dependent. Results: The best-fit metacommunity typologies were consistent over time, with metacommunity structure in each season displaying Clementsian gradients, characterized by high degrees of coherence and turnover, and positive boundary clumping. Redundancy analysis and variance partitioning procedures were applied to determine key environmental and spatial factors and to examine their relative contributions to variation in community structure in different seasons. The elements of metacommunity structure (EMS) framework was employed to identify which idealized topology best characterizes the actual metacommunity. Methods: Benthic macroinvertebrates and environmental data were collected seasonally (i.e., spring, summer, autumn and winter) from the same 70 sampling sites. Location: Five tributaries in the Hanjiang River Basin We examined whether 1) the idealized metacommunity structure is different among seasons and 2) the relative importance of underlying mechanisms on community assembly varies within and across tributaries as well as among seasons. However, our understanding of how metacommunity structuring will change over time remains insufficient, especially in rivers in the monsoon climate zone.
